Automatically detect programs that access the internet

Automatically detect programs that access the internet

Postby Mattes_01 » Sun Feb 26, 2012 2:08 pm

Hi there,

I got the firewall control for my new laptop again, but this version seems to be different from the version I used on my other machine.

The current version does not show me all tools that try to access the internet, I have to insert a rule for each program.

Is that possible to make the tool ask me again when there is a tool accessing the internet?
The other version had a pop up window whenever a program tried to access the internet where I could choose the rule.

EDIT: Even though I inserted the exception for firefox e.g. sometimes it cannot access the internet.
I have to switch to the "Enable All" mode to make it work.

EDIT2:
When I open the firewall settings, there seems to be something wrong:
I cannot edit the default initial detection settings and the "filter" drop down menu is empty.
There seems to be something wrong but I have no idea what that could be.

I am using Win 7 Home Premium - SP1

Best regards.

The behavior is not expected. W7FC (any version) should be able to detect any new (unlisted) applications automatically.

>Is that possible to make the tool ask me again when there is a tool accessing the internet?
The other version had a pop up window whenever a program tried to access the internet where I could choose the rule.

Please verify Settings/DisablePopup (must be unchecked)
Do you see any blocked events in the notification balloon.

>EDIT: Even though I inserted the exception for firefox e.g. sometimes it cannot access the internet.

Free version?
With Free version Firefox may require EnableAll. That’s correct.
Firefox utilizes some local network activity in the both directions as well.
Plus version includes a browser dedicate zone – WebBrowseZone,

>EDIT2:

Most probably the product was not correctly installed for a reason. The installation is not consistent.
Please check (with regedit) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\sphinx-soft\Vista-Wall\1.0\ZoneList.
The list must not be empty after W7FC launch. W7FC populates the list (if empty) automatically on the start
Please reinstall if the list is empty.

Hello vistafirewallcontrol and thanks for the quick reply.

I took a screenshot:

This is how it looks like.

I didn't change the standard settings, but whenever a program is trying to access the internet, I don't get the popup message.

By "Enable all" I meant I have to switch the whole firewall to the "Enable All" mode.
I added firefox manually, but that doesn't seem to work either.

I checked regedit, the folder is populated:

I have no idea where this problems might come from.
I didn't install another firewall (only the Win 7 firewall).

Very weird.

Maybe this helps to find the problem, if you need any more information, let me know.

Best regards.

Probably there is a misunderstanding here.
Let’s try to separate the problems and to find solutions accordingly.

>I cannot edit the default initial detection settings and the "filter" drop down menu is empty.

Could you provide a screenshot. Please take into account the Free version has limited functionality. The registry looks consistent.

>I don't get the popup message.

Do you see any blocked event notifications from W7FC?
The ability to detect is linked to the ability to block and to notify.
In cmd.exe (launched as Admin)
netsh wfp show options optionsfor=netevents

netevents must be on
(the default windows state)

>By "Enable all" I meant I have to switch the whole firewall to the "Enable All" mode.
I added firefox manually, but that doesn't seem to work either.

So you have firefox listed (added manually) and set with EnableAll finally. Correct?
Did you see any firefox related blocked notifications? The notifications are typically descriptive.
Please verify the firefox path. Have you inserted the right program to the list?
Do you have any other listed program set with EnableAll that does not work properly?
Try to use InternetExplorer temporarily for the experiment.
Do you have an antivirus with online filtering options switched on? The option may change the internal traffic path. If you have, try to switch the option off temporarily.
What are the permissions for other applications? ( a screenshot ?)
Some vital (including firefox related) network activity may be issued in the name of other services (AV related, for instance)

We expect you already tried to reinstall W7FC and reboot.

Hello and thanks again for the detailed answer.

The netevents are "on".

My main window looks like:
Image

There were no notifications at all.
It is very weird.

I tried it with Skype and Winamp.
Both work the way you suggested.
Check path, make sure it is the program running and put them into the list.

Again, with Firefox it doesn't work.
I checked the properties of the Firefox link and compared it with the one in the firewall control.
They are both the same.

For the internet explorer the same.
It doesn't work.

There is no online filtering activated or other tools.
Antivir and the Win7 Firewall is the only things running beneath the Win7 firewall control.

EDIT: I uninstalled it a couple of times already.
Do you think an older version might help?
As said, on my other laptop I had it running properly.

I really appreciate your work and thanks a lot!

>Again, with Firefox it doesn't work.

The problem is there are other system applications (svchost.exe, first of all) that are required for web browsing. The applications provides with domain names resolution, for instance.
The applications are not listed and so most probably mistakenly blocked.
Try to add svchost.exe to the list manually with EnableAll

>For the internet explorer the same.

Of the reason above probably

>Antivir

Are there any network related protection in the product?
Could the product be temporarily uninstalled?

>Do you think an older version might help?

Hardly

>As said, on my other laptop I had it running properly.

Is Antivir installed on your other machine with the problemless W7FC usage?

The genuine problem is clear more or less and unfortunately it’s not W7FC related.
As you could know W7FC is based on WindowsFilteringPlatform, the network security core of Windows7. WFP processes all the filters solely, W7FC is just able to manage the filters in volume easily.
WFP is solely responsible for gathering core blocking events also, W7FC just gets the events from WFP. The events are used for the notification balloon and for the application automatic detection.
So, no events from the core – no ability to detect and notify.

All the default system settings are OK (netevents = on) and it’s the default system installation state. Your system just makes the events unreachable for W7FC for a reason.
Netevents=on is the only configuration available to the users.
You could try to switch the events off and then on, just in hope the internal core problem will be self fixed. (with restarting BaseFilteringEngine service in services.msc)

The system has an inconsistency or under influence of a third party probably.
Are there any significant differences between the current system and your laptop.
Can the system be reinstalled or verified (Windows installer has the option to verify and automatically fix broken files).

Please start from trying to switch netevents =OFF then back ON.
If switching events back to ON causes the problem, the entire problem is not W7FC related.
