“AV hook check” feature allows to determine whether the traffic is hooked by an AV for the corresponding processing. (Modern AVs hook applications on-the-fly “inside” PC (locally) before the apps reach the real network. As the result the apps interact locally with an AV related services and real network communication goes through (in the name of) AVs. In such case to disable the apps you would have to disable the AV online monitoring first, otherwise LanOnly (for instance) will enable the applications worldwide because of the AV processing)

Re: The latest Betas

Postby cbeckstein » Sun Jul 12, 2009 10:24 am

What has happened to the VFC Server Edition when the V3 of VFC was released these days?

I have a valid serial for the V3 plus edition of VFC (upgraded last week from 2.5) but on my Vista machine the beta of the server edition is running.

Will there be updates to the beta Server edition (this beta is a 2.5 version)?

Or will I have to go back to the plus edition without different user support?

If I have to go back to the non-server plus edition, can I just install the V3 Plus edition over the 2.5 beta server?
Or does this force a complete VFC reinstall and tedious manual reconfiguring of the firewall settings for all my programs?

What has happened to the VFC Server Edition when the V3 of VFC was released these days?

The testing period of the Server Edition is over. We are preparing the release basing on Windows 7 dedicated version.

I have a valid serial for the V3 plus edition of VFC (upgraded last week from 2.5) but on my Vista machine the beta of the server edition is running.

The Server edition is separate product line. The licenses are not interchangeable.

Will there be updates to the beta Server edition (this beta is a 2.5 version)?

The Server Edition will be synchronized with Windows 7 firewall control and released as "Windows 7 Firewall Control Server Edition"

Or will I have to go back to the plus edition without different user support?

The TEST license key (of the Server Edition) has no time limitations so if you already registered the beta you may use it.
New registrations are not allowed now.

If I have to go back to the non-server plus edition, can I just install the V3 Plus edition over the 2.5 beta server?

W7 product line supports the version interchange seamlessly only.
In the case of installing VFC2.5 on-the-top the Server Edition you will have to manually remove per-user application settings (shown as [email protected]) and then gently (via Service manager) restart the service (or entire PC). The method is not tested however.... The firewall state after the manual deletion is unpredictable till the service start (reboot)

i´m tracking your beta updates and most of times i´m testing them
here´s some feedback beta 3.3.4.63 - windows7 professional x64

1) whilst trying to edit zones -> registration prompts & reverts to trial installing over previous 3.2.1 (also fresh install reverts to trial using previous reg)
2) after install there´s a (prev) zone of all zones?
3) installation hung leaving a temporary file in the program folder
4) installation sometimes needed to be forcibly closed via taskmanager
5) problematic shut down of windows7firewall service (i´ve reverted once to 3.2.1 and problem persisted)
6) defaulted zone is not automatically set when adding manually executables (any exe is named "def" & "zone is blank")
7) selection\edits in zones\rules -> after secondary selection with mouse settings seems null? (of thoose wich no protocol is set)
8) editing\renaming zones overwrites the default rather than creating a new zone

could you please test the newsgroup zone with newsleecher hence i did not recieve any proper notifications what to actually open?
the free version is easy but with registered version it´s quite hard when there´s no wizard for guidance

thanks much for adding the rename feature,
no need for explanation of what i wrote, it´s just a brief reflection testing this beta

>1) whilst trying to edit zones -> registration prompts & reverts to trial installing over previous
It’s by design. Any new installation has to be registered.

>2) after install there´s a (prev) zone of all zones?
It’s the attempt to preserve zones with the same names if the rule set is different.

>3) installation hung leaving a temporary file in the program folder
Which?

>4) installation sometimes needed to be forcibly closed via taskmanager
Any details?

>5) problematic shut down of windows7firewall service (i´ve reverted once to 3.2.1 and problem persisted)

Please specify the problem in details. Did you invoke the service shut down manually?
How to reproduce? Is there an antivirus installed simultaneously? Looks like 3),4) and 5) have the same reason.

> 6) defaulted zone is not automatically set when adding manually executables (any exe is named "def" & "zone is blank")

Thank you, will be fixed.

7) selection\edits in zones\rules -> after secondary selection with mouse settings seems null? (of thoose wich no protocol is set)

Sorry, could you please clarify a bit.

>8) editing\renaming zones overwrites the default rather than creating a new zone

Thank you, will be fixed

>could you please test the newsgroup zone with newsleecher hence i did not recieve any proper notifications what to actually open?

http://www.newsleecher.com/? Will try.

>the free version is easy but with registered version it´s quite hard when there´s no wizard for guidance.

Sorry, it’s probably reasonable but too abstract for a specific implementation.
Could you please clarify what was your main difficulty? What exactly was not clear for you with Plus version?

It’s by design. Any new installation has to be registered.
That´s fine, but by using the same hardware\pc the need of reissue a new license seem confusing? but ok

>2) after install there´s a (prev) zone of all zones?
It’s the attempt to preserve zones with the same names if the rule set is different.
Sounds Good, but my rulesets were no different?

>3)
>4)

i´ve tested once more, beta 3.3.4 installs flawlessly when there´s no previous vfc installed
i did follow vfc´s faq regarding new install´s, perhaps you could try install 3.3.4 over 3.3.2 (win7 x64)
the "tmp" file previously mentioned = "is-1M24S.tmp")
i´ve tried 5-6 times, installation was problematic all times
i do have "microsoft security essentials" installed wich i´ve also turned off each time when installing vfc

>7) selection\edits in zones\rules -> after secondary selection with mouse settings seems null? (of thoose wich no protocol is set)
Sorry, could you please clarify a bit.
ie: goto zones -> select newsgroupzone -> NNTP says rem port 119 -> then select NNTPs -> rem port says 563 -> reselect NNTP -> rem port now says 0 -> reselect NNTPS -> rem port now says 0

*****************************
http://www.newsleecher.com = correct, thanks

What exactly was not clear for you with Plus version?

i´m pretty clear with plus,
the defaulted zones works most of the times, the defaulted zones has a good coverage of my programs
i knew exactly what i was getting into before purchasing vfc, i knew also that i have to do potential edits in my zones\rulesets manually, "yes" sometimes confusing
naturally a wizard\guide for rulesets\zones would be much easier, whether this problematic to implement in vfc i have no idea, it probably means a vast amount of work on your behalf but a feature your plus users surely would like, me incl

but that is more of an request and not why i replied here =)

i like this program & therefore the feedback

Please check 3.3.5 (6),(7) and (8) have been fixed, thank you.

>2)
New rule sets were updated. So the feature prevents any previous creativity from deletion.

>3)
>4)
>5)
The scenario suspected is the following.
Installation on-the-top requires all the previous files unlocked (to be replaced without reboot).
So any new installation tries to find/stop a previous. The stopping may fail because of a timeout or because of a protection tool. The timeout was increased, could you please try to install 3.3.5 on-the-top of 3.3.5 several times. If the problem exists we will try to reproduce with the security essentials.

>7) (NNTP zone).
The problem was simple (and stupid) The port makes sense when a protocol is set only.
The protocol settings have been missed mistakenly.

>What exactly was not clear for you with Plus version?
>a wizard\guide for rulesets\zones
Might we discuss it a bit further? Actually it’s hard to take a detached view to the same product.
The discussion could lead to nothing, but we have some successful stories as well. The zone adviser, for instance, was initially suggested by a user as a completely unrealizable entity, but after several iterations the reasonable compromise has been found and the feature has been implemented. May be some samples from you could help to move forward.
So the problem is in constructing/modifying zones’ content, i.e rule sets, including creating/modifying the rules. Correct?
No doubts, some skills are required for that, firewall configurations should not start (even in a wizard form) from “what IP address is”, “what port is” etc. (otherwise the finish would not be prompt) Correct? Maybe the port number field should be presented as combo box (not an arbitrary edit field), just to choose the port from the list of available ones. Unfortunately the well known port list is huge and definitely will be confusing. Is there a compromise? Reasonable but not enough?

A zone helper maybe? I.e a tool to construct the entire zone if the rules construction is already clear. I.e an entity to realize how the rules work together?

Or the main problem is to create a single rule. i.e choose protocol, IP and port correctly?
The main purpose of the expected wizard is to help operating, no wizard can help to realize the security environment, estimate the network risks and decide what is safe for a user and vice versa, correct?

Should it be just finally the same rule parameters but with an ability to set them one-by-one only.
For instance, first page – Would you like to enable/disable a special site, network or any computer in the world? The second page – “which service is in the focus – web, ftp mail or all of them?”
Most probably some the above is relatively simple to realize….

* still idles trying to finish installation 3.3.2 -> 3.3.5 but 3.3.5 -> 3.3.5 works fine and without service errors, thanks
* nulled boxes NNTP seems fixed, thanks
* will test further..

i understand somehow the complexity of guided mode thus a revamp of vfc is needed & probably much headache with that, perhaps a feature for some next major upgrade

as with most commercial firewalls they come with predefined rulesets, learning modes etc etc
with vfc´s zone advisor wich is helpful of course, how about a rule advisor?
with free edition of vfc monitoring anything but "root" perhaps a rule advisor monitoring anything but "root" this keeping things a little more simplistic & realistic
this keeping any pc in pristine shape according to your predefined zones for "root"
having vfc users set "completely" own rulesets per whole machine would certanly be disastrous "agree" it´s to complex

in general i dont think this is what people asks for when requesting this feature for guidance,
most users simply want a more flexible control over their applications therefore my suggestion "rule advisor" anything but "root" to begin with

rule advisor vfc plus:
upon detection -> a combobox where user can select either currently "predefined zones" or "new guided ruleset per detection\application" ie: block - accept - block -> save ruleset\zone
thoose rulessets\zones to be named what user ever desires

sounds easy, ehh

if you now ever take on this task i´ll gladly help you testing and that for free, surely others will do the same
